Preserving Traditional Sri Lankan Craftsmanship

At BATIKS.LK, we celebrate the rich history and meticulous detail of traditional Sri Lankan batik. Our garments are not merely fashion—they are living canvases crafted by hand.

Step 01

The Hand-Waxing Technique

Every design begins on pure cotton or silk. Our artisans sketch intricate floral, organic, and abstract patterns. Using a traditional copper tool called a canting, filled with hot liquid beeswax, they meticulously trace the patterns by hand.

The hot wax acts as a resist barrier. When the fabric is dyed, the waxed areas remain untouched, preserving the original color of the textile base and establishing high-contrast layout grids.

Step 02

Sourcing & Saturated Dyeing

Once waxed, the fabric is dipped into saturated dye baths. The process is repeated multiple times to build layers of deep indigos, earthy reds, and golden tones. Each color layer requires a separate wax tracing and dye immersion.

Finally, the fabric is boiled in hot water to melt and wash away the wax resist, revealing the beautiful, rich colored patterns. This slow, labor-intensive craft process guarantees that no two pieces are ever identical.
